Brassworks was founded in 1984 by professional trumpeter Carolyn Bybee as a way to provide top-notch brass players for special occasions to churches, businesses, schools, and individuals. Brassworks quickly became the organization of choice to supply brass musicians for the many ordinations, masses, and concerts at The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit, as well as many other churches within the Archdiocese of Detroit. Over the years, Brassworks grew to include performances at numerous churches of all denominations throughout southeastern Michigan. In addition, Brassworks provided brass musicians for many private weddings, holiday parties, anniversaries, retirements, and other festive celebrations.
In the mid 1990’s the administrative duties were taken over by Brassworks’ current director, Charles Larkins, Jr. Under Charles’ leadership Brassworks continues to flourish, with additional performance locations added each year. Charles brings to Brassworks a very personable and relaxed style, plus more than thirty-five years of professional performing experience and organizational skills. Also known for his leadership of the internationally-known Galliard Brass Ensemble, Charles has been directing and performing with the GBE since 1970 throughout the eastern and southern United States, Europe, and China.
